4.10 Like a Canary
It's dark, it's rainy, and Lela's umbrella has holes in it, but it's too late to run from crazy now.
"You have the meteorite," she says. It is not a question.
"No, I agreed to meet you here for my health," Carlos grumbles. "Yes I have the meteorite."
"I know. I can feel it. Taste it, maybe."
"I'm not licking the thing."
She sighs quietly. "You misunderstand. It was not a command."
"Okay."
She holds out her hand, expectant. Carlos takes a step back, using his foot to nudge over a crate. The crate contains the meteorite fragment. It turned out to be easier to get a whole big sample 'misplaced' than it would have been to chip off a smaller piece of it.
Not that it was in any way easy to steal from the labs.
What happens next causes Carlos to recoil in shock.
"This is different than last time!" Lela whines, as she somehow levitates the meteorite and transforms it into energy, which she rapidly absorbs.
"What happened last time?!"
"It was not so intense!"
Lela shudders and pants. The meteorite is dust within seconds, but she is unharmed.
"Alright what is going on?" Carlos demands.
Lela smirks. "Do you want me to start leaving you alone now, or...?"
"Are you a witch?"
Her smile vanishes. "I was hoping you could tell me."
"You don't know. Okay, you're not a witch. Witches have to be trained."
"I weaken without access to meteorites. I hunger for them. This has only been a problem since... around my last birthday... but I can't pretend it isn't true anymore. You saw what happened. And I feel rejuvenated."
"But..." Carlos protests weakly.
"I have reason to believe I may be an extraterrestrial. I hoped you would know more about them."
Her lips draw together in an adorable frown. "What will you do with this information?"
"What... am I supposed to do with it?"
"You work at the observatory," she reminds him. "You know something."
"I know you don't look like an alien."
"So you know what one should look like? You have been through the entirety of the universe, catalogued all life, and you know?"
"I know aliens haven't been visiting us or pollinating us for... well, a really long time." He is not supposed to talk about this. "I'm not supposed to talk about this."
"Do you have contact with them?" she asks.
"No. I'm not that important. I study gravitational anomalies. That means I know about alien junk that's in space, so I'm not alarmed when our equipment sees it. Also... I really don't think you're an alien."
Lela has a big spiel for him about how she doesn't think her eyes are normal, and she isn't sure if her parents are her parents anymore, and they think she's crazy and her relationship with her family has suffered greatly. She has believed for a while now that there is some massive government coverup, and now that she has someone admitting there is, standing right in front of her, she has no idea how to proceed.
"I'm sorry I... threatened you. It was wrong, but I was worried I was going to die."
"Yeah, well, I can't help you if I'm disappeared."
"Would you be willing to take the flash drive," she murmurs, "and at least look into the observatory computers for us?"
"Us? Who is us?"
"My hacker friend. He needs an in. He's gotten into some of their systems before, but..."
"Lela," Carlos interrupts, "right now I just want out of the rain. We can talk about this later."
"Do you promise?"
"I promise. But you need to stop drawing attention to me."
Ceth fusses over her appearance backstage at Fine Fellows Hall. The cute double buns she tried for her hair worked out well last time, but experimenting with them further may not have been so successful. She's due out on the stage in mere minutes; there is no time to correct mistakes now.
She makes a dramatic entrance.
And sings her soul out.
The crowd loves her. They always love her.
Ceth often thinks about doing other things with her life, but the adoration of her fans makes it hard to want to stop living like this, skipping from performance to party to performance day in and day out.
The cold rain puts Milo in a melancholy mood. Not even turning a pineapple into a cup for its own juices could keep away the weird loneliness that creeps in when his brother and Ceth are both out of the house. Kirstin keeps her own odd schedule; as much as Milo wants to be with her, she enjoys her independence, and doesn't want to live with him, even though they are going steady now.
She says her place is way too small and crappy; she says she doesn't want to sell her place. His place is too crowded; he doesn't want to buy his own place because it would be expensive and too quiet. Quiet like it is right now.
Kirstin also can't move in here because Carlos would be a total Aunt Izzy about it. Carlos is very protective of their shared secret, and living with someone who doesn't know would be a recipe for disaster. Milo was hoping to get Kirstin on board first, and then foist the situation on Carlos and hope for the best, but that brilliant plan fell apart when Kirstin just didn't want to live here.
Carlos and Lela meet again at Buckshot Lake, ostensibly for chess.
"You may not like what I have to say," he gets right into it. "Or maybe you will. I don't know. The government asking us to snatch up all the meteorites around here is just as suspicious as you thought it was. The policy was put in place several generations ago in a failed attempt to draw out a some alien-sim hybrid they knew was in the area. The trail went cold, but the policy never changed."
Lela tilts her head, waiting for him to continue.
"The extraterrestrial in question fed off of a particular radiation." Carols tries to put what he has learned into words even a child might understand. "Meteorites striking Earth have a high chance of being soaked in that radiation, since nearby Boonitz kind of puts out a lot of it."
Lela's eyes widen. Somehow. "I am a Kryptonian and I get my powers from the yellow sun."
His eyes go half-lidded in annoyance. "Boonitz is a planet, not a star, but okay."
"It was a joke. If I were to get strength from the sun, I would not want the meteorites."
"Right. What I saw you do is pretty much what the alien hybrid would have done to the meteorites. Someone wanted the alien desperate enough to reveal itself, but that hasn't happened... until now..."
"I must be their descendant."
"You must be."
"I trust you, Carlos."
"...Why?"
She shakes her head. "I'm not psychic, or anything like that, but I'm good at reading people. I'm a PI, after all."
Carlos feels his chest tighten. "You're a private investigator?"
"I do low level police work, most of the time, but I've had a few clients. None of them wanted me to gather information on you. Don't look so worried."
"Not here to rat me out to my bosses, then."
"Carlos, what would your bosses do to me if they caught me?"
"I'm not sure. You're not the alien they were after."
"But you will not risk revealing me," she observes.
All the stories he was told as a child about murderous fairies working to police strange creatures like himself rise back to the surface of his mind. He was never cursed to be silent, as his grandfather was as a child. Carlos was terrified into being silent. "No. I won't. And I hope you'll return the favor."
"As you said... you cannot help me if you are disappeared."
She won't pry for now, but eventually, she promises herself, she will figure out what is so strange about Carlos. Aside from the obviously not fake fangs.
Carlos sets the flash drive under one of his rooks and slides it across the board to her slowly, knocking over her last bishop. Lela smiles. He must have copied something onto it, after all.

Etc.: The description of one of the Showtime objects (All Three Planets Sculpture) suggests the planet Boonitz is in the same solar system as sims Earth. Sims is a strange game.

4.9 Thundercube
As time passes, autumn sets in in earnest, bringing cold morning temperatures.
"Good luck on your audition."
"Thanks Milo!"
Unfortunately, Ceth's solo act is beaten out by a four man band called Thundercube. MN8 thinks Sister Sell Out is getting far too mainstream to take the prime time spot they had open.
The place is a dingy hole anyway, she comforts herself with thoughts about how she really is too good to perform here, while she introduces herself to Thundercube's keyboardist.
They call him 'the Egg Man' for some reason.
"You're Sister Sell Out!" he gasps, before she can even properly identify herself. "I recognize you from one of your album covers. "Unguilt Me" is probably my favorite song ever. I'd give up my left arm to write even half as good."
"Wouldn't that interfere with your career?"
"I can play one-handed," he says cheerfully.
Apparently Thundercube is a famous band all the way in the Barnacle Bay area. They intend to make big waves in Starlight Shores.
Ike Featherworth, the guitarist, rudely cuts in on his bandmate's conversation.
"The ladies are already all over you, it's just not fair," Ike teases.
Egg Man shrugs. "This happens to be a noteworthy vocalist..."
Ike looks Ceth up and down, then goes back to ignoring her. "Uh huh. Listen they want us set up at 7 tonight soooo we're going to run back to get our stuff quick."
"Don't break anything," the keyboardist warns, with a tone that indicates something has been broken in transit before.
"Just be here at 7."
"Do you have time to show me where the grocery store is?" It's such a bad pick-up line, Ceth decides it isn't one at all. Egg Man is serious. "We only just got to town, we're running late and starving, and my mates can't be trusted with such delicate tasks as buying food..."
"You're their Carlos, huh."
"Their what?"
"You're the responsible one. Never mind! I'll show you where the grocery store is."
Egg Man is amused by the buff fruits and vegetables. "Wow... that is adorable."
"Some days I just subsist on broccoli... the fans probably wouldn't like it if I got fat. Oh, and right across the street where those giant gnomes are is an arcade. It has bubble machines on the second floor, and a cafe attached. So this one street is all you need really."
He seems more interested in the cafe portion of the establishment. After talking about broccoli, Ceth is inspired to order a giant slice of cake.
"So your name is actually Eggbert?" Ceth nearly chokes on her dessert. "Did your parents hate you?"
"Haha, I guess it's possible."
The way his eyes drop when he says it tells her all she needs to know about that subject.
Milo jogs through the park, stirring up the fallen leaves as he whooshes by. After several dates with Kirstin, he is a man in love, still working up the courage to tell her that, though it is written all over his face.
Perhaps he can get his feelings out in writing. He is not as skilled with the written word as Carlos and Ceth, but it's never too late to pick up a new skill.
Carlos prepares his garden for the colder temperatures. It has fed them all well over the summer, and he intends to see it survive for next summer.
Every once in a while he glances over his shoulder, expecting to see his stalker, but she is careful to not be caught bothering him here. That could lead to actual legal intervention.
A pizza date. Kirstin is tired of hearing about how great Monte Vista's pizza is in comparison.
Fun times at the fair are more her speed.
"This ride is giving me way too many ideas," Milo complains.
Luckily, Milo is an expert at woohoo in inconvenient places, having once done in the deed in a wardrobe.
Whoa! Kirstin is definitely keeping these...
She doesn't need him to walk her home, but allows it, at least half the way. She hovers close to him, feeling the chill of the night air and using his bulky body for a shield. Soon she will have to ditch the skirts.
"You know, I thought the blue on your face was some sports thing. But it wouldn't wipe off."
"It's a rare genetic condition," Milo replies.
Hey, look! The Erutuf has a new toy!
Oh. Of course the stalker is here to ruin all the fun.
"You know," she says, "you may be alarmingly normal after all."
"Thank you," Carlos snaps. "Does that award come with a cash prize?"
"I've realized you're not going to humor me about the aliens. I will stop asking." She pauses, trying to judge by his expression if this has made him feel more positively towards her. She glances left and right and lowers her already hushed voice, "Could I buy a meteorite sample from you instead?"
"That's a weird request."
"With your clearance, it would be easy for you to break off a chunk of one of the samples and sneak away with it, provided you strike before the samples are weighed."
"I don't know about that."
"Landgraab Industries makes a point to get hold of all meteorites. Haven't you wondered why?"
"They're trying to synthesize tiberium. It isn't going well."
"I know you are not part of that research team... but I think you will help me."
"Why would I do anything for you? I'm trying to get you to leave me alone."
"It's a matter of life and death."
"You're threatening me now?"
"No," she says. "I think I'm dying."
Carlos frowns, altering his tone to be more sympathetic, "I'm sorry. Tiberium cannot cure anything."
"I will explain everything if you can get me a sample."
"I don't even know your name!"
"Lela Whitfield."
"I could go to prison for stealing from the lab, Lela."
"If you refuse to help me... and I hate to do this... I will reveal what you are."
"And what am I?"
"Not human."
Carlos shakes his head. "That's not good enough."
Lela narrows her eyes. "Are you sure it won't be good enough, when I alert the proper channels?"
